Terror en Guatemala

Waiting in line here in Mexico City, staring at the store TV, I saw a headline, "Terror en Guatemala." Yup, I thought, there's been plenty of that, starting with the attempted extirpation of the Mayan population. But the story was actually about some occult nonsense and Exhibit A was a sweater, allegedly ripped up by a ghost.

Strange that you have to work so hard to invent "terror" where the real thing is all around.

Back channel chatter

  1. Nah, nah, nah, you don't get the occult at all. If used correctly, ghosts transform real terror into lurid fun. All that, "Yah there's a mysterious sweater-ripping shadow" is so much more enjoyable than "Yah my fellow meat-beings are making me poor and could kill me, easy."

  2. I prefer to think the occult doesn't get me.
